In this unit you will be introduced to the diverse opportunities in the field of health. We will explore contemporary issues within a variety of health professions as well as professional body requirements, accreditation and/or codes of conduct will be considered. You will gain an understanding of the skills and abilities required to perform as a responsible, capable, health professional and learn how your chosen health discipline fits within the wider health community. You will start your career awareness and planning through approaches such as five-year plans and portfolios.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Identify the personal skills, capabilities and knowledge necessary to meet the standards expected by health graduates in their chosen field;
2. Map out their academic and professional trajectories over the next five years in a portfolio;
3. Demonstrate a capacity to work collaboratively as part of a team to achieve academic and real-world/professional goals; and
4. Recognise how cultural, social and professional boundaries, identities and expectations influence communication as relevant to the health professions.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

Extensions to assignments, placements, deferred intra-semester tests and examinations

Students are only permitted one extension per assignment and one deferral per intra-semester test/examination/placement (on the grounds of illness or other special circumstances as per UC Assessment Procedures). Students are NOT PERMITTED to defer an already deferred intra-semester test, exam or placement. A request for extensions / deferral must be on the Assessment Extension form with relevant documentation and must be emailed to the Unit Convener as soon as possible and no later than 3 business days from the due date.

Students must make themselves available for deferred assessments which will be scheduled by the unit convener as per UC Assessment Procedures. Any student unable to undertake the deferred intra-semester test, exam, assignment, or placement will receive a mark of zero or fail grade for that assessment task.

 

Special assessment requirements

Note it is COMPULSORY to attempt all assessment items in this unit to pass ths unit, otherwise the student will not have achieved all learning outcomes required. It is possible to fail one assessment item and still pass the unit, so long as the total unit score is 50 or more and you have attempted all the assessments. 

Using generative AI

Students are not permitted to use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in assessments for this unit.

GenAI may only be used in authorised ways when completing assessments at UC. This means that GenAI can only be used for an assessment when:

  1. the Unit Convener has authorised GenAI use for that assessment
  2. the student uses GenAI in the way that the assessment instructions allow
  3. the student fully acknowledges their use of GenAI, with proper citations, references and a GenAI Acknowledgement Statement in line with the assessment instructions.

Where the assessment instructions do not specifically state that GenAI may be used and how, then its use is not permitted for that assessment. Students must still provide the required GenAI Acknowledgement Statement to indicate whether GenAI has or has not been used in the preparation of the assessment. If unsure, students should seek advice from the Unit Convener.

Students must apply academic integrity in their learning and research activities at UC. This includes submitting authentic and original work for assessments and properly acknowledging any sources used.

Academic integrity involves the ethical, honest and responsible use, creation and sharing of information. It is critical to the quality of higher education. Our academic integrity values are honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage.

UC students have to complete the annually to learn about academic integrity and to understand the consequences of academic integrity breaches (or academic misconduct).

UC uses various strategies and systems, including detection software, to identify potential breaches of academic integrity. Suspected breaches may be investigated, and action can be taken when misconduct is found to have occurred.

Learner engagement

Professional Orientation (Health) is a 3-credit point unit, which assumes around 150 hours of work over the semester. During Semester this indicates a commitment of around 10 hours per week on lectures, tutorials, preparation, assignments, and study.

Participation requirements

To pass this unit you must meet ALL of the criteria below:

  1. Successfully complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) and upload your AIM certificate (with your name on it) to the Canvas site within the required timeframe (see the assessment information);
  2. Attempt all assessment items; and
  3. Achieve an overall grade of 50% or higher.

Please remember that you will fail the unit unless you meet ALL of the requirements above.

You are expected to actively engage in and contribute to tutorial discussions and activities to enhance your understanding of the unit content and therefore the quality of your assessment responses.

Required IT skills

Students should be conversant with searching for and accessing information via electronic means, the use of Canvas, Cadmus, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
