Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:1. Describe the molecular and biochemical changes induced by genetic and epigenetic abnormalities and interrogate how such changes lead to specific disease phenotypes;
2. Critique the various roles that inheritance and gene-environment interactions play in human disease;
3. Critically evaluate the advances and ethical considerations in the treatment of genetic abnormalities in an era of personalised medicine; and
4. Generate experimental data and apply genetic and epigenetic principles to the interpretation and evaluation of this data.

Learner engagement
The contact hours for each student in this unit consist of 12 hours of lectures (12 x 1 hours), 14 hours of workshops (7 x 2 hours) and 6 hours (3 x 2 hours) of practicals. The remaining 118 hours of workload (out of 150) should be distributed across the various assessment tasks.
Participation requirements
While strongly encouraged, attendance is not compulsory for lectures or workshops. Attendance is compulsory for all practical sessions.
Required IT skills
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel software, as well as prerequisite knowledge from 11736 Genetics and Genomics.
