This thesis unit is a component of the professional doctorate in business administration (the DBA). In following on from the coursework components and the research proposal, candidates are required to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the state of knowledge in the area of inquiry, as well as the relationship of the research to the broader frameworks pertinent to relevant professions and the disciplinary field. Likely work would include the systematic review of literature, a review of relevant theory, systematic review and articulation of appropriate research methodology for the study, collection and analysis of research data, writing up of empirical sections of the thesis or developing contributions and conclusions. Candidates will consult with supervisors on an appropriate semester of work. This could constitute approximately 5,000 words of thesis work.

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- In supporting the development of a thesis, the HDR candidate will be engage in critical reflection, synthesis and evaluation of literature, theory, methodology and/or data;
- Develop, adapt and implement research methodologies to extend and redefine existing professional practice and the production and/or application of knowledge;
- Disseminate and promote new insights to employers, peers, professional communities and the society; and
- Generate original knowledge and understanding to make a substantial contribution to existing professional practice and the production and/or application of knowledge.
